Personal Coaching

Discovery
After you have made the decision to ignite your ability, you and your coach will have a 1 ½ hour long Discovery Session in which your coach will:

  • Explain how the session will proceed
  • Discuss balance, values, goals, actions plans or other issues
  • Discuss coaching and what tools might be used
  • Discuss options of how often you’ll meet – whether by phone or person
  • Discuss some coaching terms and their definitions
  • Work with you to design an alliance to achieve the success you desire

Note: Before the Discovery Session, your coach will have an introductory conversation with you and will send you some forms to fill out in preparation for the session such as your coaching agreement, questionnaires, values preparation, personal information and Wheel of Life, to name a few.

Wheel of Life
One graphical way of looking at one’s whole life is represented by a coaching tool called The Wheel of Life.  It’s a wheel that is dissected into 8 sections, each one referring to a generally accepted category of describing a whole life.  The objective of looking at one’s life in this way is to find a starting point in understanding where things might be out of balance or where activities may be less than satisfying.

Wondering where your life is out of balance?  Here’s an opportunity to reflect.  Using the wheel and the questions below, discover how satisfied you are with these areas of your life.  Remember, this is a snapshot taken in this moment recording your level of satisfaction, so, for example, you may be quite satisfied with the fact that you don’t have a significant other in your life right now, and you might rate this area an 8.  You may be surprised at what you find!

Directions: With the centre of the wheel as “0” (zero) and the outer edge as an ideal “10”, rank your level of satisfaction with each life area by drawing a straight or curved line to create a new outer edge.  The new perimeter of the circle represents your Wheel of Life.

Here are some questions you might want to consider when rating your satisfaction level:

Career
How are things with your job?  Self-employment?  Profession?  What about your sense of purpose, meaning, contribution and expression at work?  Are you stimulated?  Are you itching for advancement?  What about your ability to earn?  Is your current position suitable to your temperament and personality?  What about the enjoyment factor?  Are the company’s values in line with your own?  Do you receive enough recognition and validation?

Money
Do you have enough cash and money to meet your needs?  Are you able to purchase things that you like and want?  Are you in debt?  Do you have liabilities, bills, credit?  What about income?  Savings?  Investments & Assets?  How are your financial management skills, your shopping and spending?  Do you think about abundance or lack?

Health
What’s the physical, mental and/or emotional state of your health?  Do you exercise?  Do you feel fit?  How is your relationship to your body?  Are you happy with your weight?  How is your outlook on life overall?  How is your energy level/mood?  How comfortable do you feel with yourself?

Family & Friends
Family of origin & created family: Good relationships with parents or caretakers, siblings? The way you grew up affecting the way you are today?  How do you interact together?  What are you like together?  Do they bring out the best or worst in you?  What about the amount of time you spend together?  Frequency, duration, quality?  Do you embrace your traditions, cultural roots?  Do you have your own family? Spouse?  Children?  Are you happy with your parenting skills?

Friends: Old friends?  New friends? Friends with common interests?  Interesting, exciting, supportive, fun, varied? Numbers, quality, quantity? Friends vs. acquaintances, colleagues?  Closeness, trust, communication, authenticity?

Significant Other
Do you have/need a primary relationship?  If not, is that okay?  Marriage, companionship, touch, intimacy, closeness, connection, Love?  Conversation, dates, events, activities together?  Quality, quantity, time?  Roles, expectations, negotiating, compromising?  Housework, division of labor, children?  Trust, confidence, friendship, support?  Understanding, commitment, freedom, autonomy?

Personal Development/Higher Meaning
How satisfied are you with your growth, learning, evolution, development?  Are you going for those personal pursuits?  Do you want to be more self-aware?  Is your spiritual life fulfilling?   Where are you with your sense of purpose and higher meaning?  What about meditation, contemplation, or prayer?  What’s your connection to nature like?

Fun & Recreation
Do you know what these words mean?  Are you getting out enough?   Are you having fun?  Do you relax?  Do you have enjoyable activities, hobbies, travel, sports, clubs, vacations, games?  Activities outside of work or income earning?  Nature?  Socializing? Play, laughter, enjoyment, joy?

Physical Environment
Consider your surroundings, your home, your neighborhood, locale, city, country, geography, commute?  What about the buildings, structures, office, rooms, décor, style, colour, furnishings?  Where do you spend the majority of your time?  How do you feel there?   Does it fit/suit you?  What about the tone and atmosphere of your surroundings?  Are you comfortable where you are? Proximity to activities you like to engage in?  Seasons, climate?  Politics, economy, industry, population?

So, what did you come up with?  How bumpy would the ride be if this were a real wheel?  This is a good place to start looking at areas where you want to improve your life and to think about what you might do about it.  Then you and your coach can begin working together to make it happen!
